This CLE program, hosted by the Oregon State Bar International Law Section, is geared not only to lawyers and business people who have regular dealings with clients or contacts outside of the United States, but also to individuals who wish to build an international law practice, develop international business or enhance their cultural awareness generally. The discussion will cover:
- Reconciling divergent cultural values in ways that promote business and enhance long-term relationships.
- Diversity as a business development tool: developing a multicultural skill set so that you, your clients and your business thrive in the 21st century.
- Lawyers' ethical obligation to not only avoid bias, but also to actively promote diversity and provide access to justice within law firms, among client bases or as representatives of legal and business communities.
- Building trust and communicating effectively with people who speak differently.
- The appropriateness of hiring country- or region-specific business consultants.
- Practical tips to develop cultural awareness and build a diverse client base.
- Understanding diversity in your community: things you can do and partnerships you can establish to develop cultural competency.
