Jonathan H. Singer


Jonathan is an attorney focusing on real estate and other commercial matters, regularly counseling developers, investors, property owners and purchasers, small business owners, lenders, borrowers, landlords, and tenants on a wide range of real estate transactions and disputes. Jonathan also represents individuals and companies on general business matters and in commercial disputes.

Jonathan is a fourth generation Portlander with deep roots in the community, where he remains active in civic and community affairs (including serving on multiple nonprofit boards). Before joining Miller Nash Graham & Dunn, Jonathan practiced law in the Washington, D.C., office of O’Melveny & Myers, where his practice included counseling clients on civil litigation, political-law matters, white-collar defense and internal investigations, and regulatory compliance. Prior to beginning his legal career, Jonathan was a political consultant and writer who interviewed dozens of high-profile political figures ranging from Barack Obama and John Kerry to Bob Dole and Walter Mondale.


Jonathan is the Editor of Miller Nash Graham & Dunn's real estate development blog, From The Ground Up, and was recognized as a "Rising Star" in the area of real estate law by Oregon Super Lawyers® in 2015 and 2016.

    Represented Portland industrial property owner in long-running dispute seeking coverage for over $20 million in environmental cleanup costs, successfully briefing and arguing issues relating to the scope of indemnification

    Represents tenants and landlords in connection with resolving disputes arising under commercial leases.

    Successfully sought and obtained quiet-title judgment on behalf of client with respect to land in Oregon in connection with a property dispute.

    Represents business owners in connection with drafting, revising, and negotiating corporate documents, including operating and compensation agreements.

  • Shareholder Dispute Litigation and Mediation
    Represented business owners in prosecuting and defending actions alleging breaches of fiduciary duty, and negotiating and resolving such actions through mediation and acquisition.
  • Pro Bono Criminal Appeal
    Briefed and argued appeal of multiple burglary convictions to the Maryland Court of Special Appeals, the state's intermediate appellate court, in a pro bono representation.

  • Marriage-Equality Amicus Brief
    Filed pro bono amicus brief on behalf of the Oregon Area Jewish Committee and the Oregon Board of Rabbis in the Geiger v. Kitzhaber and Rummell v. Kitzhaber consolidated marriage-equality case, in which Oregon's ban on same-sex marriage was struck down. The brief was also cosigned by the Community Relations Committee of the Jewish Federation of Greater Portland, and two dozen Jewish and Christian clergy from around the region, and supports the proposition that marriage is a fundamental right that cannot be withheld from individuals on the basis of their sexual orientation, and that recognition of civil same-sex marriages need not infringe on the right to free exercise of religion.

  • Pro Bono Internal Investigation Into Hiring Process
    Conducted internal investigation into a nonprofit organization's hiring process, including interviewing key witnesses and presenting substantive findings to the organization’s board.
  • Public Policy
    Advised clients on the intersection of law, politics, and public policy, helping to craft and validate effective strategies to achieve business objectives.

  • Executive-Branch Appointments, Nominations, and Confirmations
    Advised more than a dozen executive-branch appointees on ethics issues and the confirmation process, including in meetings with the Office of White House Counsel, Office of Government Ethics, and designated agency ethics officials. Advised individuals and entities on financial conflict-of-interest and post-employment restrictions.
