History

In 1873, a law firm called Northup & Gilbert opened its doors in Portland, Oregon. Today, that same firm now employs more than 120 lawyers, has offices in five cities and calls itself Miller Nash.

With over 135 years of history, we could easily devote an entire website to our story. But for the sake of brevity, we'll stick to a list of the highlights:

  • Miller Nash, in its various incarnations, has produced a governor, a congressman, an Oregon Supreme Court justice, a U.S. Court of Appeals judge, a Multnomah County Circuit Court judge, an Assistant Attorney General, an Assistant U.S. attorney, and leaders of the Oregon State Bar, among other esteemed positions.
  • Miller Nash was the first Oregon law firm to hire a female associate and the first to hire an African American attorney.
  • Partner Cliff Carlsen was the first Oregon attorney to enter Mississippi in the 1960s to help disenfranchised blacks during the civil rights conflicts.
  • Several Miller Nash attorneys boarded Greyhound buses and traveled to The Dalles where they served as temporary hearings officers and helped ensure fair elections during the Rajneeshee voting scandal in the 1980s.

Miller Nash has survived depressions, world wars, political and economic upheavals, and major changes in how and why we practice law. It has emerged as a highly respected law firm that has had a major influence on the legal and business life of the Pacific Northwest.
